Reading a fur
Every natural fur has three layers. Looking at each one tells you most of what you need to know.
- Guard hair
- The longer outer hairs. They give a fur its colour, its sheen and its outline.
- Underfur
- The soft, dense layer beneath, which gives a fur its fullness.
- Leather
- The skin itself. On a well-made piece it is supple and light.
How to tell Brush the hair gently against its direction: it should spring back. Then part it and look at the base — an even, dense underfur is the sign of a well-chosen pelt.
